POSITANO - Aching Beauty and Legs

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

Positano is an expensive town, and you can expect to pay more here than other cities and it is much more expensive than other towns in the south. Believe me when I tell you that you should budget some extra Euro for this stop. I can also tell you that it will be worth every penny you spend. I would suggest that you do not do a day trip here because you will be joining a bunch of other folks from Capri, Rome and Naples. Spend the money to get a room so that you can be there early and later in the day when the town is less crowded, and enchanted by the views from your balcony. You can take a daytrip via a fast boat that takes 40 minutes to Capri but you may not want to leave here. If you spend some time on the beach, bring flip flops because it is not all sand. The water is wonderful. You can rent a beach chair for about 12.50 Euro and walk off the beach to some seaside restaurants.

Take a walk into the church of Santa Maria Assunta whose dome is viewable from all over town. This is often seen in pictures of Positano. There is part of an ancient mosaic floor that is viewable in the church.

After that you can shop at the many boutiques and sample the locally produced Lemoncello.

Hotels

Hotel Miramare

I have been staying at this hotel since the first time I went to Positano on my first visit in 1995. It has changed and gotten better over the years, but one thing stayed the same, all the rooms have excellent views of the town, beach, and harbor. The rooms are all lovely but there is a wide variance in the cost depending how big you want your room and balcony. We try to stay in room 210 which is one of the more costly “special rooms”. This has a huge balcony with floor to ceiling windows and a shower with a glass wall overlooking the sea and beach.

Le Sireneuse

This hotel is the top 5 star in the town. The prices are sky high, especially in season. If you choose to stay here you will be rewarded with lovey rooms an views of the town. It is located higher up in the town and a long walk to the beach but they do have a lovely pool here. There is everything you need for a resort stay including a restaurant, a spa and three bars. Rooms with Sea View and balcomny start at ~1,700 Euro.

Restaurants

Down by the Beach

Da Adolfo

Not on the Positano beach. You reach this place by a free boat from 10 to 4 daily that goes from Positano to the restaurant and beach. The beach is secluded and they offer the standards of the region for lunch.

Buca di Baco

This eatery is down by the beach in the lower part of town. The restaurant is well known, and the food is very good. They offer fresh seafood here but they also have some fried vegetable and pasta dishes if you are not interested in the fish. Good choice with well recommended hotel as well.

Le Tre Sorelle

Good choice for typical fare for this part of the coast. Try the Spaghetti with Baby Clams or Spaghetti alle Vongole. Also a good choice for a pizza.

Upper Town

Next2

Located in the upper part of the town. This is an excellent choice for dinner. They have a pretty courtyard that you can sit outside in. They offer a tasting menu if you are so inclined. I have only had the A la Carte Menu. They offer up some interesting combinations. Good choice of seafood, meat, and pasta here. The mixed grilled fish is an excellent choice.

Da Vincenzo

Wonderful place for a great meal. The décor is lovely inside under vaulted ceilings and there is a seating area outside with a view of the coast, but you are right on the road. The staff is welcoming, and the food is terrific. Of course, fresh fish is offered but they also have some homemade pasta dishes. Vincenzo himself makes for a fun and lively time. Be sure to make a reservation at least a day before your desired time.
